Press Release

ELISABETH SCHERFFIG Downside Up 18 May - 29 June 2001 Faggionato Fine Arts is pleased to announce their forthcoming show, Downside Up, an exhibition of recent works by Elisabeth Scherffig, Scherffig’s intense compositions, present images that are both realistic and fantasy. Through the painstaking modulation of minute marks, drawn in monochrome pastel she reveals all that is lying under our feet. Reconstructing from her unconscious the actuality of what lurks beneath the surface of the planet, making us aware of a vast nether world of potential disaster. Who has not noticed the confusing mass of cables, pipes, timber, bricks and girders; snaking their way under the foundations of cities and towns. It is difficult to believe that from this confusion comes the order we expect in our everyday lives. Scherffig’s painting is not only a revelation but also a warning. Faggionato Fine Arts presents 7 new works, which explore the texture, intervals and spaces of this buried world. A world in which perspective has been forced by being seen from above, the composition has emerged not through normal volumetric relationships, but in a play of relationships seen in transparency: For further information and visuals please contact Anna Pryer on telephone: 020 7409 7979. Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday 10.00 – 6.00 pm Saturday 11.00 – 1.00pm Closed Bank Holiday Weekend
