Press Release

Faggionato Fine Arts is proud to announce their forthcoming exhibition of New Works by the German born artist Elisabeth Scherffig. In this new series of 8 large scale monochrome drawings, Scherffig continues to explore the process of mutation in the urban landscape in a much larger format than previously exhibited. The monumental scale and subject matter of the works, (225 x 150cm) exude both a physical and emotional tension. As a scientist might examine cells under a microscope Scherffig takes just a narrow slice of city views of construction sites that are familiar to all of us, but on which we never dwell. With exquisite detail she presents us with what at first appears to be images of chaos and abandonment, but are actually immensely ordered, complex and a minutely examined details of the foundations of our urban environments; twisted iron girders and large steel pipes wooden beams, bricks and palettes, shapeless heaps of soil and clay. Are these piles of matter the start of complex architectural spaces or the detritus of decay? Through these images Scherffig continually sets up a series of unanswered contradictions and questions, which extend far beyond the visual; construction, or destruction, intellectual or emotional, figurative or abstract, chaos or order? This dichotomy is depicted in the material and technique in which Scherffig works, familiar, yet not actually in existence, these landscapes are constructed from fantasy. Her preferred medium, soft chalk lead in sepia gives the tough imagery a gentle mutedness. Each precise, minute mark on the paper has its exact place, creating an intricate series of almost claustrophobic interlocking marks these works parallel the skills and intensity of Old master drawings, whilst simultaneously presenting the viewer with a very contemporary emotional and physical landscape. Born in 1949 in Düsseldorf, Elisabeth Scherffig has lived and worked in Milan (Italy) since 1970. Recent Solo Exhibitions include: 2005, New York, Faggionato Fine Art; 2003, Como, Borgovico 33; 2000, Milan, Massimo Valsecchi. A catalogue is available.
