Press Release

GIUSEPPE CACCAVALE Drawings 27 February – 28 March 2003 Faggionato Fine Arts is pleased to announce Giuseppe Caccavale’s first UK show. The exhibition includes six large drawings and a glass work produced for his recent solo show, Tavolo da disegno, at the Centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee, Rome (28 November 2002 – 8 February 2003). Caccavale’s drawings radiate with the toil of a medieval master craftsman. Making use of ancient figurative skills and old techniques, he shuns the homogenous images that saturate contemporary society. In the manner of a fresco cartoon each drawing is composed of four separate sheets, each painstakingly worked with minute uniform marks. In the course of this labour intensive creative process the figures slowly emerge from their backgrounds, taking a paradoxically simple and spontaneous form. The end result stands as a vestige of the careful process of creation. Caccavale’s extreme work ethic can also be identified in his glass pieces. He describes his engraving technique as ‘drawing on glass’. Using the thinnest of instruments he delicately outlines elementary forms on coloured panes of glass. The translucent quality of the material highlights the artist’s interventions on the blank pane. The emphasis on organic growth in all Caccavale’s work produces images of incomparable uniqueness. In the words of Erri De Luca “With him returns the infallible touch of the maker… who cannot correct himself, do it again. Who risks so much anymore?” Born in Italy in 1960 he trained at l’Istituto Statale d’Arte and at l’Accademia di Belle Arti de Naples. He now principally resides in Marseille. Recent exhibitions include Napoli Anno Zero. Qui e Ora, Castel Sant’Elmo, Naples, 29 November – 16 February 2003; spazio aperto al disegno, Galleria D’arte Moderna, Bologna, 29 November 2002 – 6 January 2003; Giuseppe Caccavale: L’école des dentellières aveugles, Musée Grobet-Labadié, Marseille, 28 June – 29 September 2002. -------------------------------- Reception for the Artist Wednesday 26th February 6-8 pm Gallery Hours Mon - Friday 10.00am - 6.00 pm Saturday 12.00pm – 4.00 pm For further information and images please contact Bunny Turner, email info@faggionato.com or telephone 020 7409 7979.
